Events of an ordinary day
Not really an extraordinary day, but as with any day, some unique events.
- A rather long consultants’ meeting after morning report
- Spent most of the day and evening transferring the patient database I’ve developed onto a new computer (Linux, using Ruby-Rails, MySQL, ImageMagick). The existing computer keeps getting cut off the network (connected by wireless) so we need the server to be right by the clinic.
- A new resident is starting this week, and peds is his first rotation. It’s fun to help someone get started.
- A 650 gram (1 lb 9 oz) baby born three days ago is doing quite fine, except for a burn the size of a 50-cent piece (naira coin) from a heating pad. The odds are much against her — it’s such a long haul between 650 g and being well enough to go home.
- A newly admitted girl may have rabies, but we hope it’s just an unusual presentation of typhoid or perhaps a (non-rabies) viral encephalitis.
- Dr Dennis … what’s your name, really??
- Someone stole our digital camera (or did I just misplace it???) but Barb, with the help of a friend, got it back.
- I read the first half of a kids’ book on the Titanic to Luke … it’s the main event of human history as far as he’s concerned.
Oh yes, and I should mention that we’ve had a new baby for the past 5 weeks: David, born in the ProLife program and waiting for adoption. He’s cute, and is the main reason we’re a little more tired and cranky than usual. (Picture of David 3 days ago — Barb’s face is still beat up after a fall at Hillcrest School).

I’m really enjoying reading your blog. Thanks so much for taking the time to write what’s going on in your corner of Nigeria. Blessings!

[...] A bit of good news that got buried in the rush around the events of November was that we discharged baby Babalola a couple of weeks ago. As far as I know, he is the smallest premie to have survived at our hospital, at 650 grams (1 pound, 7 ounces), at least in the past 15 years. This is a baby who should be named Miracle. (See the post of September 6.) [...]
