Faith died

Faith died yesterday, in the ICU. Now his mom would like someone to care for his sister. She doesn’t see any way she can do it all herself, and find a job to support the two of them. I am so worn out this week, I’m sad about Faith, at the same time feel bad that I no longer feel the full impact of a child’s death. And I wonder how I can even be sorry for myself being tired and failing to save Faith, when the mother’s loss is so great. Most of her “support team”, counselors from Spring of Life, left for the all-Africa AIDS conference in Abuja the morning after Faith died, so she’s lacking even that support right now.

    Baby Faith died

Last week in the Pambazuka AIDS day roundup I wrote about baby Faith who was being cared for by Kid’s Doc in Jos. Faith and his twin are both HIV but Faith was in a very bad way with pneumonia.

I have been following your blog since I discovered it a couple of months ago. I blogged about the twins for World Aids Day and was so sad to see the news today that Faith had died. I wanted you to know that there are people out there who appreciate what you are doing despite having such little resources and support. Through you I would like to send my sincere condolences to Faith’s mother and let her know that there are people far away who have been reading about her and her children and are thinking of her at this terrible time in her life. It seems ironic that at this time when she desperately needs support, her counselors are away at an AIDS conference in Abuja - maybe less conferences and more drugs!
    Thank you

Thanks for your comments and encouragement, Sokari. I’ll pass along your sympathies to Faith’s mother. You say, “maybe less conferences and more drugs” and sometimes I think that’s true. But Faith’s story, without going into details, would point to the complexity of the problem and the fact that pouring more money and drugs into programs is only part of the answer.

maybe less conferences and more drugs
    less shouting and more listening
    fewer demands and more giving
less blame (on all sides) and more action
