I like watching people watching TV

TV on Peds WardIt’s wonderful to see God’s healing work and to feel we have some small part to play. Something I find nearly as encouraging, though, is going around the children’s ward and seeing people watching the Jesus film. I wrote some time ago about how, with our supporters’ contributions, we were able to install a simple video system into the ward with TVs in all the rooms. Each day we play a different 10-hour program, and each program includes, twice, some form of the Jesus film, in English and Hausa.

Nigeria is a very religious country and most people know Jesus as a mystical figure to be worshipped, a prophet, a savior, or a source of magical power. Fewer, though, have much idea of who he was on earth, his humanity, his revolutionary teachings about God’s will being done in and through us (”the Kingdom of God”). People of other religions may have heard that he was a prophet, but don’t know what it was he taught as a prophet, much less of how he spoke of giving his own life in love for the saving of the world. Thus it’s always special to me to see people watching as Jesus heals the sick and demon-possessed, resists the self-righteous leaders, prays in the garden, dies and rises again.

Here’s another great idea to show on your video loop:

I love it. Really shows the humanity of Jesus and how people were drawn to Him.

Thanks for the tip about “Matthew: The Visual Bible.” The single rating on Amazon isn’t too encouraging but I bought it anyway, and I’m sure we’ll be able to use it here. Not only that, I bought the “Acts” volume and (at Amazon) was lured into “The Gospel of John” with Christopher Plummer. Our staff will love having some new titles to watch instead of the same one each day.
