Monday Tidbits

  • Barb, assisted by Saralynn, has started her own blog: Mama’s Choice Chop. It’s devoted to recipes and, we hope, some thoughts, scintillating chats, and wonderful insights. Recipes first, though. Yum.
  • Jonathan has given up computer games, to which he says he was addicted, Lisa is giving up sweets. Inspired by those resolutions, I am going to start walking again in the mornings. I did it the year we were in Wheaton and most of the year after, but stopped. It’s not too fun walking on the compound here but I’ll take along some audio to listen to.
  • We talked to a lawyer today about starting adoption proceedings for Luke — to be adopted by Saralynn and David! Only officially, of course; we’ll still be his real parents.
  • We have a patient named Yusufu (i.e., ‘Joseph’) who is about 10 years old and probably has leukemia. He needs a bone marrow aspiration to make the diagnosis before we start treatment, but the government hospitals were on strike last week and we couldn’t find a hematologist. Today, Dr. Bode-Thomas over at JUTH put me in touch with a hematologist there who will do the procedure tomorrow. Hopefully, we can start treatment Wednesday. The outlook for leukemic patients here is quide bad, though.
  • Lauren Martyn, here from Texas with SIM for two months, is doing some tutoring, crafts, and fun time with Luke. It’s wonderful to have someone else working with him … we see how it helps to have a fresh, young face and a new, fun approach.
  • Interesting article on Nigeria from Economist.com: Big men, big fraud and big trouble.
