Open-label RCT evaluating oral artesunate-clindamycin vs quinine-clindamycin, both given twice daily for 3 days, for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in 100 Gabonese children. The activity of artesunate-clindamycin was comparable to that of quinine-clindamycin in the cure rates at day 28 of follow-up.

Open label RCT of IV artesunate vs quinine for severe malaria in three south Asian countries. Mortality in artesunate recipients was 15% (107 of 730) compared with 22% (164 of 731) in quinine recipients. Treatment with artesunate was well tolerated, whereas quinine was associated with hypoglycaemia.
