"Much has been written about how AIDS is undermining development in sub-Saharan Africa. ... But not enough is being said about the threat to African development posed by continued and rapid population growth.
"... we review demographic prospects in Africa, where birth rates remain high and where population trends have been most affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. We aim to assess how both factors—continued population growth and AIDS—might affect prospects for raising living standards in Africa, and we identify policy implications."
