When I walked into the back room of Spring of Life, the place was buzzing with excitement and seventeen boxes were on the floor. A celebration … the children’s medicines we had been awaiting for months had finally arrived.
For the past six weeks we’ve been putting off starting new HIV patients on antiretroviral drugs, because we didn’t have a good supply or, in the end, any supply at all. We were using tablets whenever possible, but there is a limit to how precisely you can cut and crush a tablet, after all. We kept waiting and waiting for the syrups to arrive. Pharmacies promised that the syrups would be in stock soon, or that they were on their way from Lagos or India, or that they did not know.
A special gift of money raised by the students at the Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis allowed us to make this large purchase, so we’re all ready for the next three to six months. Many thanks to these students and the other friends and supporters who contributed toward caring for these special children. It has been so encouraging to see the progress that many have made over the past 18 months, having had regular medical care, home visits, often treatment for tuberculosis, and in some cases the antiretroviral drugs.
