Randomized controlled trial of amodiaquine (AQ), sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) and both together (AQ+SP) in 944 patients with uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Burkina Faso. Half the patients were under 5 years old. The AQ+SP combination was found most effective, with clinical failure, recrudescence, and new infections each occuring in only 2%. Overall failure rate by WHO criteria was 4% compared with 9% in SP and 18% in AQ. Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg., 73(5), 2005, pp. 826-832. See also the accompanying editorial.
