Special Care Nursery
| | | | | | The twins are the most comfortable ones of the bunch, busy kicking each
other in their incubator. They weighed only 2 pounds 6 oz (1100 grams)
at birth but have done quite well in the month since they were born.
They're about ready to give up their place in the ICU to someone else. | | |
Two incubators and several iron bassinets are around the edges of the
room. The incubators are simple but clever examples of appropriate
technology. They're made mostly of wood, with plexiglass tops and door,
and are warmed with an ordinary incandescent light bulb in the base.
The only "advanced technology" is a simple thermostat to turn the bulb
on and off. A piece of gauze with one end dipped in a pan of water acts
as a wick to provide the needed humidity. |
